Teaching Jobs in Gulf 2026: KHDA, Subjects in Demand, and Salary
Indian teachers are in demand in Gulf private schools. Here is what KHDA and ADEK require, which subjects have openings, and 2026 salary data across UAE and Qatar.
Indian teachers are working in Gulf private schools across all six GCC countries. The demand is not new - Indian curriculum schools have operated in the Gulf for decades, and the Indian expat population supports a large schooling ecosystem. What has changed is the regulatory framework. Dubai tightened KHDA requirements. Abu Dhabi moved under ADEK. And the post-2020 expansion of private school capacity in UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia created more open positions than the system had trained local teachers to fill.
The Gulf Private School Ecosystem in 2026
Gulf private schools run on one of several curricula: Indian (CBSE, ICSE), British (IGCSE/A-levels), American (US-accredited), or International Baccalaureate (IB). Indian teachers primarily fill positions in Indian curriculum schools and, for certain subjects, in British and IB schools.
UAE is the largest employer. Dubai alone has over 180 private schools. Abu Dhabi follows with significant school density in Al Ain and the city itself. The Northern Emirates - Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah - have lower salary scales but lower cost of living.
Qatar's Education City and the large private school sector catering to the Indian and wider South Asian expat community offer consistent positions.
Saudi Arabia's private school sector is expanding rapidly, especially in Riyadh and Jeddah, following the government's education investment push under Vision 2030.
What KHDA and ADEK Require in Dubai and Abu Dhabi
Dubai: Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA)
KHDA approves teachers working in Dubai private schools. Requirements for Indian curriculum teachers:
- Minimum qualification: Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) from a UGC-recognised Indian university, OR
- Bachelor's degree in subject + B.Ed. in same subject (e.g., B.Sc. Mathematics + B.Ed. Mathematics)
- Teaching experience: KHDA prefers at least 2 years of classroom teaching experience for primary appointments; secondary roles typically require 3+ years
- KHDA does not issue teaching permits directly to individual teachers - the school applies for your approval once you are hired
- Subject-specific: KHDA recognises certain Indian teaching qualifications more readily for CBSE curriculum subjects (Math, Science, English, Social Studies)
Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK)
ADEK's requirements are similar but include an additional step: teachers must complete the ADEK Teacher Licensing examination once employed. This is a post-hire requirement, not a pre-departure one.
For both KHDA and ADEK: your B.Ed. or equivalent will be subject to attestation - Ministry of Education India → MEA → UAE Embassy in India before submission.

Most Gulf teaching contracts include annual airfare to India, accommodation allowance or provided accommodation, and health insurance. Some CBSE schools provide schooling discounts for teachers' children enrolled in the same school.
